Methodology for the Strategic Location of Smart Parking Applying Intensity of Use Criteria

Abstract

Previously, it was thought that mobility problems related to private vehicle travel were associated with infrastructure deficits and inadequate management. However, the new mobility paradigm indicates that private vehicle travel can be made more efficient by incorporating intelligent systems. In this sense, this study focuses on the development of a methodology that evaluates the location of private parking lots and their relationship with land uses in order to intelligently calculate the proximity between parking lots and their frequency of use. The case study chosen was the Historic Urban Center of Arequipa where the parking supply was surveyed and the land uses published by governmental institutions were validated. With the data obtained, the Voronoi diagram was used to determine the parking lots with the closest proximity to the most frequented land use, and the Kernel density was used to evaluate the area of coverage of the parking service. The results obtained allow us to identify the demand for parking services based on the intelligent analysis of available supply and the land uses with the highest frequency of use, providing a contribution to the planning of parking facilities.
