Abstract

The potential for energy recovery from a wastewater treatment plant in Peru was estimated and described in this paper. The thermal and electrical energy were obtained from a calculation methodology using wastewater characteristics and an established design data set including efficiencies for the combined heat and power unit (CHP). The organic load rate was 3.98 kg VS/m3 day, the estimated electrical power was 241.7 kW and the estimated thermal power was 309.4 kW. After the upgrading and modification of the plant it will be electrically self-sufficient and could even to sell the excess of electricity to the grid. The co-digestion of others substrates is suggested to improve the production of biogas and the free volume of the digesters.
